How Often Should You Pressure Wash Your Home in Minnesota?
Minnesota's extreme seasons create a unique challenge for homeowners. The long, harsh winters leave behind road salt stains, ice dam residue, and grime. Then humid summers invite algae, mold, and mildew to take over siding, decks, and driveways. So how often should you really be pressure washing your home?
For most Plymouth homes, we recommend washing your siding at least once per year — ideally in late spring after the last freeze but before summer humidity kicks algae growth into overdrive. North-facing walls and areas near trees or water features tend to get green faster, so keep an eye on those spots.
Driveways should be cleaned one to two times per year. If your driveway is near I-494 or Highway 55 where road salt use is heavy, twice a year is ideal — once in spring to remove winter salt and grime, and once in fall to clear organic buildup before the freeze.
Roofs are a different story. Most asphalt shingle roofs in Plymouth should be soft washed every two to three years. The black streaks you see are caused by Gloeocapsa magma algae, which slowly eats away at shingles. Never use high-pressure on a roof — it voids most manufacturer warranties.
Decks and patios benefit from an annual clean, especially if they're made of wood. Composite decks can often go 18 months between cleanings. The best time is May through June, before you start using outdoor spaces for the summer.
Plymouth neighborhoods near Medicine Lake, Parkers Lake, and other natural areas tend to see accelerated growth due to increased moisture and tree coverage. If your home is in one of these areas, consider moving to a more frequent schedule.
The bottom line: a consistent annual cleaning schedule protects your property value, prevents costly repairs, and keeps your home looking its best year-round.
